Travel Guide: How To Maximize Your Stopover in Qatar.

Qatar's tourism boost has been pretty outstanding to see, having recorded a smashing five (5) million international arrivals as at the end of 2024, according to the Qatar National Tourism Council. Even if you aren't an industry player or travel enthusiast per se, there's no doubt you've scrolled past a number of posts from travelers on your social media feed showcasing their visits /experiences from the country, and with good reason!


Even better, you needn't plan a full-blown itinerary to be able to enjoy the stunning destination. Qatar allows travelers turn one holiday into two, with its Stopover Program.


I had the pleasure of visiting the Qatari capital, Doha, and i absolutely think it's a destination that deserves a spot on everyone's t0-see list.

Background

I went solo traveling through Doha in July, 2025 and here’s a detailed guide on all you need to know about obtaining the Qatari Tourism Visa, taking advantage of the Stopover Program, and exploring Doha on your next vacation.


Step 1: You must fly Qatar Airways

A valid return or multi-city ticket on Qatar Airways is the most significant condition.

If your transit time in Doha is between 12-96hrs, you are eligible for the Stopover perks.

Flight tickets must be verifiable on the carrier's official website.


Step 2: Obtain The Qatar Tourism or Transit Visa

Whether you're stopping over (up to 96hrs) or visiting for a longer touristic stay, Ghanaian passport holders are required to obtain an e-visa for visits to Qatar. Holders of passports from nationalities can verify their requirements on the Hayya Portal.


Here are five (5) easy steps to Obtaining The Visa

  1. Create a profile on the Hayya portal

  2. Click "Start Here" on home page and input your details

  3. Select mode of transportation to Qatar

  4. Enter Nationality

  5. Select recommended visa type and begin your application


Notes on Qatar Tourist / Transit Visas


  • E-visa is valid for up to a 30-day stay in the Kingdom of Qatar

  • A minimum 3 months passport validity from start of arrival in Qatar is required

  • The visa is single-entry and can only be used once

  • The visa is non-refundable and non-transferable

  • For transit visas, accommodation must be booked on the Discover Qatar portal


Visa Requirements

  1. Qatar Airways E-Ticket number

  2. One (1) passport size pictures

  3. Scan of Passport Bio Page

  4. A copy of your Valid USA, UK, Schengen visa (for A3 applications)

  5. A copy of your accommodation booking (for A1 applications)

  6. Completed Hayya Application form


Step 3: Cost

The Visa Fee for the Qatar E-visa is QAR 100 (approx $28)

There are no hidden/additional charges 



Notes on Where to Stay, Things to Do & Places to Visit

Depending on experience you want out of Doha, there are a number of cool spots to lodge at and things you can do!

    I stayed at the plush Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha and had an absolutely lovely time! I highly recommend it for the quality of service, great ambience, food and excellent hospitality provision. Options for medium to budget hotel options are available on the discover qatar portal


  2. What To Do

    You can easily book one of the pre-planned transit tours with discover qatar here, and immerse in the local experience with one of their well trained guides. Tours range from desert experiences, city tours, beach getaways, nightime adventures, helicopter rides over Doha, to mention a few!


  3. Here are a few must sees:

    Alternatively, you can tailor-make your exploration to suit your time, book uber rides for transfers (costs can range from QAR 5 to QAR 35 for 30mins rides) and explore places of interest conveniently. Here are a few spots to see


    1. Visit the National Musuem of Qatar

    2. Visit the Sheikh Adullah Bin Zaid Islamic Cultural Center

    3. Visit the Qanat Quartier at The Pearl Island

    4. See the Katara Cultural Village

    5. Visit the Souq Waqif

    6. Explore the Mina District

    7. Enjoy a gandola ride at the Villagio Mall

    8. Explore the box park at Old Doha port

    9. Book a dhow sunset cruise

    10. Explore the Qatar National Library
